End of School and Thanksgiving
Although it has been less than a month since my last post, much has happened. For starters, the school year is over and I am now in summer vacation until February. Next year, my class and I will be the 3rd class (12th grade Seniors).
On Thursday last week, my first day of vacation, my family and I celebrated Thanksgiving! Since I over think everything and just love making things extra hard for myself, I spent a lot of time planning out what to do. Two days prior, my friend Vivi and I went shopping and my mom and I spent Wednesday and Thursday cooking. On Wednesday, I made mashed potatoes to be heated up later and I baked the apple pie and pumpkin pie from scratch. On Thursday, I cooked the sweet potato and made a side stuffing while my mom cooked the chicken. Turkey is very expensive here so we substituted it with chicken.
On Thanksgiving, I watched the parade from my chromebook. That evening, Vivi arrived and brought mbejú and chipa, which are Paraguayan foods. My sister also invited 2 of her friends. We set the table and spent a lot of time eating. The food turned out really well. The chicken was overcooked but that wasn´t my fault and it was still good so... The mashed potatoes were really good, everyone loved the stuffing which is great since it was my first time making it, the sweet potato was good, (a bit weird since I made it from scratch and the marshmallows were overcooked) but still nice, and the pies were amazing. Only my mom was bold enough to try the cranberry sauce.
On Friday, I woke up feeling a little under the weather with a headache and cough, so I´m recovering from that. Right now, I just have a small cough that will probably be gone in a day or 2. Once I´m back to 100%, my mom and I will start preparing for Christmas! My sister and dad want nothing to do with decorating, so the tree will be up to my mom and I.
Christmas shopping will be done later, and I will try to go out with friends often during my break! Shout out to Mrs. Boots, thank you for sharing my blog with my teachers, it was so nice to hear from them. I feel so good knowing that you all are thinking of me back at AWest.
To answer some of the questions I got: Spanish in Paraguay is very similar to the Spanish taught in class, but they also often mix it with Guarani. One of the biggest differences is that they say vos instead of tú. Most of my classmates speak a tiny bit of English, but only 3 of the girls in my class are fluent enough to have full conversations.
Until next time!!!
I really think you did a wonderful job with the Thanksgiving dinner, and I'm glad you got to share that tradition with your host family and friends. I will say it again, I'm so proud of you! (and now I know who will be in charge of turkey day next year here!) Te quiero mucho!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful feast you prepared! I know it was a great experience for your host family to experience an American holiday. Way to go! I can't wait to hear about your Christmas celebrations and fun during your summer break! It's so funny to know you are having summer when we are getting snow tonight! LOL
