School Has Started!
Last Friday (the 17th) was my first day of school, or as we all called it, ultimo primer día. I'm in the senior class at my school and this was their last first day. When I arrived at school and went to our classroom, it was filled with students and teachers greeting each other, and parent volunteers passing out shirts, filling balloons, and setting up the food. Once everyone showed up, all the senior classes got into line for our grand entrance. We were given balloons, smoke flares, and noise makers. One by one, the classes walked onto the soccer field.
Once we were all there, the principal and school pastor began giving speeches. I didn't understand them or really listen, but I got the gist: be good students, have a good year, and be upstanding Christians. We sang the Paraguayan national anthem, had more speeches, and then dispersed to talk to family and take photos.
Eventually, we all returned to our classroom, where our homeroom teacher gave a few emotional words. There were tears. We took more photos and then ate pizza. The volunteers had also prepared cupcakes with personalized messages for each student in the class. Mine read: “A pesar da la distancia que estas de tu casa, te deseamos éxitos en lo que emprendas!!! Despite the distance you are from your home, we wish you success in whatever you undertake!!!” The rest of the day was spent playing games, eating, and talking with friends.
Classes started this week. We have the same subjects and teachers as last year, in addition to now having economics class. I went supplies shopping a few days before the first day, so I have what I need for the 5 months I have left. I didn't receive the government distributed books, but that's just extra supplies. I still don't understand much of the material, but I can follow the lectures better.
Super nice. I like your hair highlights.
ReplyDeleteWhat a special return to school “ceremony”. I can’t imagine how proud the kids must feel. I’m glad you’re following the lectures better, probably makes the day easier. Have fun, learn what you can and makes the best memories.
